With the Civilian Conservation Corps’ 75th anniversary coming next year, 2008, the Trinity County Historical Society sponsored the compiling of all the articles pertaining to that program during its existence in Trinity County from 1933 through 1942. Since the enrollees worked mainly on projects on National Forest lands under the supervision of the Forest Service, collected articles also include those pertaining to the Trinity National Forest. Articles from Trinity Journal microfilm in the Trinity County Library in Weaverville were copied and then bound together in book form. The product from this gathering of articles includes two volumes totaling 516 pages and the index.
The camps covered in the articles include those at Big Bar, Fawn Lodge (state), Hawkins Bar, Mad River, Minersville, Hyampom, and Peanut in Trinity County, and Harrison Gulch in Shasta County. The young CCC enrollees constructed and/or maintained virtually scores of telephone lines, trails, roads, lookouts, Forest Service administrative site buildings, and bridges in Trinity County.
A sample of some of the information from the articles includes:
♦ Seeds from Douglas-fir trees up East Weaver Creek near Weaverville were sent to Germany in 1910 by the Trinity National Forest and planted in a large stand there. In 1939 the trees were described by a German forester as “growing better than the native European species.”
♦ The CCC camp at Peanut in 1936 had a glee club called the “Peanut Vendors.”
♦ The Peanut Camp also raised thousands of pheasants to turn loose in portions of Trinity County, in coordination with the California Department of Fish and Game.
♦ In 1939 during suppression of many lightning fires a district ranger couldn’t get supplies to a particular crew that was working on a fire in an isolated area. Using their ingenuity, the crew caught and ate wood rats.
♦ The new bridge over the Trinity River at Hawkins Bar in 1940 was previously used as a temporary bridge in the construction of Hoover Dam. At that time the bridge was reported to have been “the largest bridge project accomplished by any CCC engineering crew in the United States.”
♦ A chipmunk named Elmer led Joe Strunce, the lookout at Cabin Peak, to water.
Trinity County residents are invited to use the books for researching data on people, places, and projects mentioned in the articles during that time period. To check the information available in the books, use the index below. Hard copies of the collection are available for review at the Jake Jackson Museum and the Trinity County Public Library in Weaverville and the Willow Creek-China Flat Museum in Willow Creek.
